Standing seam metal roofing Red Deer — RemStar Roofing
Residential Metal Roofing — Red Deer, Alberta

Metal Roofing and Siding Built for Alberta Homes

Red Deer winters are hard on roofs. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, spring hail and high winds put every material to the test. Metal roofing is different, and so is the way we install it.

RemStar Roofing has been installing metal roofing and siding across Red Deer and Central Alberta since 2010. We operate our own metal fabrication shop right here in Red Deer, which means we can produce custom panels, matching flashings and specialty profiles in-house when your project calls for it, and we have strong supplier relationships for standard materials when that is the better fit.

We carry a full range of metal profiles: standing seam snaplock, corrugated, mechanically seamed, board and batten, woodgrain plank, flushwall and agricultural panels. We are also the only authorized BTR Systems representative in Alberta, giving our customers exclusive access to BTR's full line of steel shingles and stone chip profiles.

Why Metal Roofing Makes Sense in Alberta

50 years+

Built to Last a Lifetime

A quality metal roof installed in Alberta typically lasts 50-75yrs or more, that is two or three asphalt roofs in the same timeframe, without the repeat cost of tearing off and re-roofing. Or the environmental cost of masses of asphalt shingles in the landfill. A metal roof can be a smart investment in more ways than one.

50+ Year Lifespan Commercial Grade Steel Minimal Maintenance

Built for Alberta's Tough Climate

Alberta's climate is genuinely hard on building materials. Spring hail, summer heat, freeze-thaw cycles through shoulder seasons and heavy snow loads in winter all take their toll. Our steel panels handle all of it without cracking, curling or absorbing moisture. Snow sheds naturally off a metal roof rather than sitting against the structure, reducing ice dam risk and the cumulative load that damages traditional shingles over time. Metal does not support moss or algae growth either, so your roof stays looking sharp for decades.

Hail Resistant Natural Snow Shedding No Ice Dams Freeze-Thaw Rated
Lower
Cost
over time

A Smarter Long-Term Investment

Metal roofing costs more upfront than asphalt, and we will always be straightforward about that. But when you factor in 50-plus years of service life, minimal maintenance, no re-roofing cycles and the energy efficiency gains from metal's natural reflectivity, the lifetime cost is typically lower than asphalt. It also adds measurable resale value, buyers and appraisers recognize a metal roof as a feature that reduces their future cost of ownership, and that shows up in what people will pay for your home.

Lower Lifetime Cost Energy Efficient Adds Resale Value No Re-Roofing Cycles

Metal Roofing FAQ

Is a metal roof loud?

Many people assume metal roofs are noisier than other types of roofing materials during rain or hail, but this common belief is largely a misconception. Modern metal roofing systems are designed with advanced technology and installation practices that significantly reduce noise levels. Unlike the bare metal roofs of the past, today’s metal roofs are installed over a solid substrate. Additionally, insulation and underlayment layers act as effective sound barriers, dampening noise from rain, hail, and outside disturbances. This construction ensures that metal roofs can be just as quiet as, if not quieter than, roofs made from traditional materials like asphalt shingles or tiles. The combination of these elements means that the serene ambiance inside your home remains undisturbed, offering peace and comfort regardless of the weather conditions outside.

Will a metal roof rust?

The belief that metal roofs inevitably succumb to rust is outdated, thanks to significant advancements in metal roofing technology. Today’s metal roofs are far more resilient against rust and corrosion, primarily due to the innovative materials and protective coatings used in their construction. These roofs are typically made from galvanized steel or aluminum, metals known for their resistance to corrosion. Galvanized steel, for example, is steel coated with a protective layer of zinc, which sacrificially protects the base metal from rusting. Similarly, aluminum naturally forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to oxygen, further enhancing its resistance to corrosion.

Moreover, modern metal roofing materials often receive additional protective coatings beyond the initial galvanization or aluminum base. These can include special paint systems and metallic coatings designed to seal the metal from moisture and environmental contaminants, the primary culprits of rust. These coatings are meticulously engineered to adhere to the metal surface, providing a durable barrier that extends the life of the roof significantly.

The combination of these protective measures means that today’s metal roofs are equipped to withstand the elements for decades without showing signs of rust. This durability is a key reason why homeowners and builders opt for metal roofing, ensuring long-term performance and aesthetic appeal with minimal maintenance.

Do I have to have my old shingles removed?

While it’s not always necessary to remove your existing shingles before installing a new metal roof, the decision to do so should be made after careful consideration of various factors. At RemStar, we understand that each roofing project is unique, and there might be situations where installing a metal roof over existing shingles could be considered. However, it’s crucial to be aware that skipping the removal of old roofing materials may conceal potential issues such as hidden damage, water intrusion, mold, or rot that could compromise the integrity and performance of your new roof.

Opting to install directly over old shingles might seem like a cost-effective and time-saving choice initially, but it’s important to consider the long-term implications. Any underlying problems could lead to costly repairs in the future, possibly involving the removal of the new metal roof to address issues from the existing roof.

Given these considerations, we highly recommend consulting with our team at RemStar before making a decision. We’re here to conduct a thorough assessment of your current roof’s condition and discuss the best course of action tailored to your specific needs and circumstances. Our goal is to ensure that you are fully informed and confident in the choices you make for your roofing project, guaranteeing the best possible outcome for your home.

Is a metal roof difficult to maintain?

Metal roofs are often celebrated for their minimal maintenance requirements, a significant advantage that sets them apart from other roofing materials. This ease of upkeep is rooted in several key characteristics inherent to metal roofing:

  • Weather Resistance: Metal roofs are engineered to withstand severe weather, including heavy rains, high winds, snow, and extreme temperatures. This resilience means less frequent repairs or replacements due to weather-related damage.
  • Debris Shedding: The sleek surface of metal roofs allows for easy shedding of leaves, branches, and other debris that can accumulate. This feature, coupled with the roof’s ability to effectively channel water away through well-designed gutter systems, minimizes the need for manual cleaning.
  • Low Lifecycle Cost: Although the initial installation cost of a metal roof may be higher than some alternatives, its long lifespan and low maintenance requirements result in a lower total cost of ownership. Regular maintenance tasks are typically limited to inspections and gutter cleaning, reducing the need for professional services.
  • Ease of Repair: Should a section of the metal roof become damaged, it is often possible to replace just the affected panels rather than undertaking a full roof replacement. This modularity makes repairs simpler and more cost-effective.

These features contribute to a metal roof’s reputation for being low-maintenance. Homeowners and building managers appreciate the combination of durability, aesthetic appeal, and the minimal effort required to keep metal roofs in excellent condition throughout their extended lifespan.

I've had an excellent experience using Remstar; from the time I picked up the phone and spoke with the staff in the office I felt much more confident in my choice to contact them versus some of the other roofing companies I had called who seemed less willing to offer their expertise and services. I had phoned and explained I had a commercial shop with a metal roof that has had an issue with water leaking from heavy rain and snow melt. The gentleman on the phone I spoke with put me in contact with their foreman and estimator Jon Waterman. Initially the other companies I had phoned seemed less interested in doing a repair rather than trying to instill the notion that the whole roof needed to be replaced. Jon came out in the spring time to assess what kind of repairs I would need to facilitate to in order to mitigate the leaks. Due to the age of the building Jon had alluded to the possibility that these sort of repairs could take more than one application to completely stem the flow of leaks. I felt reassured the work to be completed was the right choice, and considerably more cost effective than an entire roof replacement. Jon has been an absolute pleasure to deal with this entire time. I've been very pleased with the level of communication, professionalism, insite, and experience he brought. Once it was warm enough and the snow melted Jon had started repairs on the roof and applied a sealant coating to stop the influx of water leaking through the roof. After the first application was completed mother nature decided to throw everything she had at it with a driving rain storm that night. Our building went from having multiple leaks across the roof to just one very small area. I could not be happier with the result of the first application as well as the tedious and detailed work Jon completed in over plus 30 degrees celcius this summer breathing in smoke from the forest fires. Again, his expertise and insite was absolutely bang on. We were both surprised and quite pleased that the first application had stopped 99% of the leaks we were experiencing before. Especially since this preventative maintenance had not occurred before on this building. Currently Jon is scheduled to come back to perform some more work on the tiny area that requires a little more attention. This has been an absolute win in my books considering the age of the building and the existing leaks that were scattered across the entire roof. My thanks goes out to the team at Remstar Roofing and especially to Jon Waterman. They will be my first call from here on out for any of our companies roofing needs.

RemStar installed a metal roof on my cottage in early July. Brandon was a pleasure to work with, from quoting thru to completion. He’s very accessible and responds promptly to all messages. The roof looks terrific! Jeff, Colin, and Jonathan did a great job muscling thru some sketchy weather to complete the work without delay. They’re an experienced, personable crew to work with and did a thorough job cleaning up the site when finished. The on-site panel forming equipment they use is very efficient and produces a custom fit, high quality panel. Brandon and RemStar delivered on all aspects of the job, and always went the extra mile to ensure there were no issues. I wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again or recommend their services. We researched our roof replacement thoroughly and chose Remstar for quality at a fair price. We were completely happy with the company, the owner's personal service and the installation crew. The standard of service is exceptional - following up without being intrusive and clearly a professional approach in every way. Thanks Jason for a great job - and for using excellent materials with great installation and product warranties.

I recently had my roof, eaves, fascia and soffits replaced by RemStar and the team was amazing! They were on top of their health and safety wearing the fall protection which is really important to me. They also did an excellent job cleaning up the site every day at the end of shift. I appreciate the great communication the team had with me as the weather did throw us for some loops sometimes. Highly recommend them to anyone.

    Specifications

    Metal Roofing Specifications

Most roofing quotes leave the details out. Here is exactly what we install, so you can compare our quote against anyone else's on the same terms.

    Gauge

24, 26 and 29 gauge steel. Heavier gauge means a flatter panel and better dent resistance.

    Substrate

Galvalume, an aluminum-zinc coated steel that outlasts plain galvanized through Alberta freeze-thaw cycles.

    Paint systems

PVDF and SMP. PVDF holds colour longest against UV. SMP is the value option with strong performance.

    Concealed fastener systems

Snaplock standing seam, mechanically seamed standing seam, and TRQ 250. No screws through the face of the panel.

    Exposed fastener systems

Corrugated and agricultural panel, for shops, outbuildings and acreage projects.

    Seam heights

1 inch to 2.5 inches, chosen for roof pitch, snow load and appearance.

    Panel widths

    12 inches to 42 inches.

    Panel lengths

Brake formed to 21 feet, roll formed to 50 feet, and roll formed to any length on site. Longer runs mean fewer seams, and fewer seams mean fewer places for water to find.

    Other profiles

Board and batten, woodgrain plank, flushwall and soffit, plus BTR Systems steel shingles and stone chip profiles.

    Manufacturers supplied

Alberta Direct Metal, Cascadia Metals and BTR Systems. We are the only authorized BTR Systems representative in Alberta.

    Fabrication

Panels and flashings are formed in our own metal shop in Red Deer. Nothing waits on a supplier for a custom piece.

    Underlayment

Roofnado AnchorDeck PSU self-adhered ice and water shield, with Roofnado AnchorDeck synthetic underlayment across the field. Both rated from minus 40 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Valleys and eaves

ARCA folded and hemmed valley detail, hemmed eaves, booted penetrations. Existing flashings replaced wherever the construction allows.

    Workmanship warranty

Lifetime on residential installations, with no time limit and no fine print. Material warranties are separate and vary by product.

Not sure which of these you need? That is what the site visit is for. We walk your roof, take the measurements, and put the specification in writing on the quote.

    Before you sign anything

Questions to Ask Any Metal Roofer

Two metal roof quotes can differ by thousands of dollars and be for completely different roofs. These are the questions that explain the gap. Ask every contractor you are considering, including us.

What exact profile is being installed?

Standing seam covers several different systems. We install snaplock, mechanically seamed and TRQ 250 as concealed fastener options, plus corrugated and agricultural panel where exposed fasteners make sense.

    What gauge is the steel?

We offer 24, 26 and 29 gauge. A quote that does not state the gauge is not a quote you can compare.

    What is the substrate?

Galvalume steel. It handles Alberta freeze-thaw cycles better than plain galvanized.

    Concealed or exposed fastener?

Concealed fastener systems hide the screws under the seam, so nothing penetrates the face of the panel. Exposed fastener systems cost less and suit shops, barns and outbuildings. We install both, and we will tell you plainly which one your roof calls for.

    What paint system?

PVDF or SMP. PVDF costs more and holds its colour longest. SMP performs well at a lower price. The paint system, not the colour, decides how the roof looks in twenty years.

    Who manufactures the panels?

We supply Alberta Direct Metal, Cascadia Metals and BTR Systems, and we form panels ourselves in our Red Deer shop.

Who fabricates the trims and flashings?

We do, in house. This is the question that separates most quotes. A contractor ordering stock flashings works with whatever arrives. We bend ours to fit the roof in front of us, and a wrong piece on Friday is remade on Monday.

How long can the panels run?

Brake formed to 21 feet, roll formed to 50 feet, and roll formed to any length right on your driveway. A continuous panel from ridge to eave has no lap seams in it at all.

What seam height, and why that one?

We install 1 inch through 2.5 inch seams. Pitch, snow load and appearance all factor in. Anyone quoting a metal roof should be able to tell you why they picked theirs.

What underlayment goes under the panels?

Roofnado AnchorDeck. The self-adhered AnchorDeck PSU ice and water shield goes where water sits and ice dams form, and the AnchorDeck synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the field. Both stay workable from minus 40 to 240 degrees Fahrenheit, which matters when a roof goes on in February. Underlayment is the line that gets quietly downgraded, so ask what is going under your panels.

    How are the valleys detailed?

We use the ARCA folded and hemmed valley detail, the method set out by the Alberta Roofing Contractors Association. A hemmed valley locks the panel edge over itself rather than relying on sealant to keep water out, so it is still doing its job in twenty years when caulking would have failed.

How are penetrations and eaves handled?

Penetrations are booted. Eaves are hemmed. Both are places where a roof either sheds water for decades or starts leaking in year five, and neither is visible from the ground once the job is done, which is exactly why it is worth asking.

Are existing flashings replaced or reused?

We replace them wherever the construction allows. New panels over old flashings is a shortcut that shows up later, and since we fabricate our own flashings there is no cost reason for us to reuse them.

Can you show me a roof you installed five to ten years ago?

Yes. Ask on the site visit and we will point you at metal roofs we installed across Central Alberta years ago, so you can see how the panels, the paint and the flashings have held up. A new roof looks good in any photograph. An older one tells you something.

    Workmanship warranty or material warranty?

They are two different things and both matter. The material warranty comes from the manufacturer and covers the panel. The workmanship warranty comes from the contractor and covers the installation. Ours is lifetime on residential work, with no time limit and no fine print.
