Spring Roof Maintenance

cleaning roof

In Red Deer, the snow is melting, the sun is shining and SPRING is in the air. For many homeowners that means spring cleaning is right around the corner. When thinking of spring cleaning, it’s easy to overlook the roof, many homeowners cannot wait to throw open the windows and clean the house but forget to check the roof! So here is your short and sweet list on what to look for when completing Spring Roofing Maintenance: 1. Clean those guttersMake sure you remove any leaves, twigs or debris so water is free to flow off your roofing and away from your home. Don’t forget to inspect soffits, fascias and vents to ensure these are free from animal nests and debris as well. 2. Inspect your shinglesIf your shingles are buckling, curling, cracking or have significant grain loss, then they may be at the end of their life expectancy. Have old or missing shingles replaced to avoid leakage and damage to the roofing deck and the interior of your home. 3. Check your flashingsFlashings are the metal strips that seal gaps around the edge of your roof, they prevent water from seeping under your shingles. Over time, the wind and winter elements can loosen flashing and lead to mold or water damage in your home. Check around your chimney, skylights and valleys as these are the most common leak locations. 4. Look for water or ice dam damageAn ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water that backs up behind the dam can leak into a home and cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.  If you have an ice dam, you should check your insulation level and ensure you have enough roof and soffit vents installed. Preventative roof maintenance is the way to keep your roof in prime condition and protect your investment in your home. When doing any maintenance on the roof, always think safety first. Place your ladder on solid, level ground and ensure that the ladder will not slip. Watch where you step and take time to ensure your inspection is done carefully and thoroughly. If you’re not confident doing the spring roof maintenance tune-up yourself, call Remstar Roofing today and we will take care of it for you. 403-896-4701
